Movement and dial of a verge watch

Movement: THOS STONE Thame No504., c. 1800

dial; white enamel movement; gilt-brass; pierced and engraved, silver; engraved, stone; red, blued-steel

55.7 mm diameter back plate 38.6 mm diameter pillar 5.25 mm height overall 16.7 mm thickness

Case: missing. Dial: White enamel dial with an outer circle for minutes with lozenge marks at XII, III, VI and IX, surrounding Roman hours I-XII. There is a winding hole at IIII. Hands missing. Movement: Circular gilt-brass plates with four cylindrical pillars and a separate barrel bridge. The front plate is much larger in diameter than the back plate. Gilt-brass mainspring barrel with setup (ratchet system?) beneath the dial. Fusee with chain and standard stop-work. Four wheel going train, the centre wheel solid, the third and contrate wheels with four crossings. The third wheel and contrate pinion are recessed into the front plate and run in a separate bridge. Verge escapement, the crown wheel running between a screwed-on potence and a riveted counter-potence. Plain steel three-arm balance with spiral balance spring and ‘Tompion’ regulator, the silver index engraved 10,20,, 30. Pierced and engraved balance cock with solid foot, the table engraved with a swan and with a portrait bust within banners, lances and trumpets at the junction. A red-coloured end-stone in a blued-steel setting. Movement signed: THOS STONE Thame No504. Notes: Thomas Stone of Thame 1801 – 1809 is mentioned in the churchwardens’ accounts in that period.
